Start on a blank note, your last note or your folders, so you can write the moment the app opens.

BrainDump can open ready to write. You decide what shows up first. Tap the face icon, then “Settings”. Find the “Home” section. On iPhone, under “Open the app”, pick “On a new note”, “On the last note” or “To the folders list”. On iPad and Mac, use the “Continue from last note” toggle instead. Optional: “Default folder” sets where new notes go. Optional: turn on “New note on app launch” to start with a blank note every time. Good to know On iPhone, the pencil in the keyboard toolbar starts a new note any time. Widgets and Siri can open a new or last note too.

Choose what you see when BrainDump opens

Empty your head into as many pages as you need, then choose one folder for all of them at the end.

Freewriting is a space to get everything out of your head. You pick the folder at the end, not before you start. On iPhone, tap “Freewriting” in the keyboard toolbar. On iPad and Mac, pick “Freewriting space” in the sidebar (⌘F). Write. Pages save as you type. Tap “New note” to start another page. Optional: open “Improve” for “Rewrite”, “Correct grammar” or “Create title”. Tap “Save” and choose a folder (or “New folder...”). Each page becomes its own note there. Good to know “Cancel” keeps your pages. BrainDump reminds you an hour later. Freewriting is plain text, with no formatting. “Improve” uses your AI allowance.

Put BrainDump on your Home Screen or Mac desktop so a new note is one tap away.

A widget turns your Home Screen into a shortcut to your notes. On iPhone and iPad Touch and hold the Home Screen. Tap the + button (top-left), then “Add widget”. Search for BrainDump. Choose a size and tap Add Widget. Place it where you want and tap Done. On Mac Control-click the wallpaper and choose Edit Widgets. Or click the date in the menu bar, then Edit Widgets. Search the widget gallery for BrainDump. Click the widget, then “Done”.

Show BrainDump under the time on your Lock Screen.

A Lock Screen widget lets you reach BrainDump without opening your home screen. Touch and hold your Lock Screen. Tap Customize > Lock Screen. Tap the widget area below the time. Search for the BrainDump widget. Tap it to add, then tap Done.

Quick actions are the two buttons at the bottom of your Lock Screen. Put a BrainDump control there to start a note fast. Touch and hold your Lock Screen. Tap Customize > Lock Screen. Tap the − button on a bottom button to remove it, then tap + to add a control. Search for BrainDump and tap a control. Tap Done. Good to know Want a widget under the time instead? Press the iPhone Action Button to run a BrainDump shortcut.

Hold the Action Button and BrainDump does the thing you chose. Open Settings > Action Button. Swipe until you reach Shortcut. Tap Choose a Shortcut and select your BrainDump action. Press and hold the Action Button to launch it. Good to know No BrainDump action yet? Build one in Apple Shortcuts.

Control Center is one swipe away, in any app. Open Control Center. Tap the + button at the top left. Tap “Add a Control” at the bottom. Tap a BrainDump control to add it.

Shortcuts lets you run BrainDump actions with a tap, a voice command or an automation. Open the Shortcuts app and tap + to create a shortcut. Search for BrainDump. Add the actions you need. Tap “Done”. Optional: add it to Siri, the Home Screen or the Share Sheet. Good to know Siri already understands a few phrases without any setup. See Siri and the Mac menu bar.

Send text from any app into a new or existing BrainDump note.

Found something worth keeping? Send it to BrainDump without leaving the app you are in. In the other app, tap the Share icon. Or select text, swipe the actions menu and tap “Share...”. Choose BrainDump, or tap ... and choose BrainDump. Pick a new note or an existing one. Tap “Save note”. On Mac Select text or a web link and choose Share > BrainDump. Edit the text if you like. Choose “New note” and pick a folder, or choose “Add to” and pick a note. Click “Save”. Good to know In “New note”, pick a folder first. Without one, nothing is saved.

Group related notes in folders, and nest folders inside each other.

Folders keep related notes together. You do not need one to start writing, because new notes land in “Uncategorized”. On iPhone, tap the folder icon (top-right) to open Folders. Tap the folder-plus button (bottom-right). Add a name. Optional: pick a color and icon. Tap “Save”. For a subfolder, open a folder’s actions menu and choose “New folder...”. Good to know Only top-level folders can be pinned (“Pin folder”). Deleting a folder moves its notes to Trash. You can write first and move notes later.

File notes into folders, keep important ones on top and search by title, text or tag.

Move Open a note’s menu and tap “Move to”, then choose a folder. For several notes, tap “Select”, tick them and tap “Move to”. Pin Swipe a note or open its menu and tap “Pin”. Pinned notes sit first in lists and in the “Pinned” tab. Find Type in “Search folders, notes or tags”. It looks in titles, note text and tags. Notes in Trash are not searched.

Deleted notes go to Trash first, so you can undo or bring them back.

Deleting is not final. A note stays in Trash until you remove it for good. Open a note’s menu and tap “Move to bin”. Tap Undo right away if it was a slip. To restore, open the Trash folder and tap “Restore”. To erase, tap “Delete Permanently” on one note, or “Empty trash” for all of them. Good to know Restored notes always return to “Uncategorized”, not their old folder. Permanent deletion cannot be undone. A trashed note stops being shared by link.

Add tags to find notes by topic across folders.

Tags cut across folders. One note can be in a folder and also be tagged “Work”. Open a note’s menu and tap “Tag...”. Type a new tag and tap “Add”. Or tap a suggested or existing tag. Tap “Done”. To manage tags, open the Folders screen and go to the “Tags” tab. There you can create, pin, edit or delete a tag. Deleting removes it from every note. Good to know Free plans allow 3 tags per note. More tags need a paid plan. See plans.

Turn lines in a note into tick-off items.

Checklists live inside any note. Mix them with normal text. In a note, tap “Format” in the keyboard toolbar. Tap “Checklist”. On Mac and iPad, press ⌘0. Type your item and press Enter for the next one. Tap a checkbox to tick it off. Good to know Shortcut: type  ] and a space at the start of a line. Want a to-do list made for you? Combine several notes into a single note, in the order you choose.

Merging is free. Use it to pull scattered thoughts into one place. Tap “Select” and tick 2 or more notes. On iPad and Mac, use the context menu “Merge notes...”. Tap “Merge”. Drag the notes into the order you want. Choose whether to turn on “Keep original notes”, then tap “Merge”. Good to know With “Keep original notes” off, the originals move to Trash. The new note goes in the first note’s folder.

Search your notes and folders from your device’s Spotlight, without opening BrainDump first.

Spotlight can find your notes and folders from the Home Screen or the Mac search bar. Open Spotlight on your device. Type a word from a note’s title or text, or a folder name. Tap the result. BrainDump opens that note or folder. Good to know The first launch indexes everything. After that, saving or renaming a note and creating or editing a folder updates the index. Tags and pins are not searched. Results stay in your device’s own index. Nothing is sent online.

See how much you write, which folders and tags you use most, and what still needs sorting.

A quick overview of your notes. It shows all-time numbers. On iPhone, open the Folders screen and tap “Options”, or tap “Actions” inside a notes list. On Mac and iPad, open “Options”. Tap “Notes statistics”. What you see Total notes and total words. Your longest note, with “Open note”. Notes length: short, medium or long, by reading time. Most used folders and tags. Most used Ask and Create modes (needs AI access). “Organize your notes”: how many are uncategorized, with “Sort out notes”, and what is in the bin. Good to know “Empty bin” empties it right away, with no extra confirmation. See Trash.

Switch the Folders screen between rows and a grid of icons.

Pick the view that is easier on your eyes. Open the Folders screen. Tap “Options” (top-right). Under “Folder style”, choose “List” or “Icons”. Good to know “Icons” shows folders in a 3-column grid. The same menu has “Style” (Standard, Minimal, Essential). See Choose a style.

Sort a folder’s notes by title or edit date, and choose how much of each note the list shows.

Open a folder. On iPhone, tap “Actions”. On Mac and iPad, tap “Options”. Tap “Sort by”. Pick “Title” or “Edit date”, then “Ascending” or “Descending”. Tap “Note style”. Pick “Only title”, “Title and body” or “Complete”. Good to know Each is one setting for all your lists, not one per folder. Pinned notes always stay on top. Recent and Pinned lists always sort by last edit, so “Sort by” is not there.

Open the notes you touched last, from the Recent notes list or the editor’s clock button.

In the editor (iPhone) Tap the clock button in the keyboard toolbar. Pick a folder under “Recent folders”, or a note under “Recent notes”. Good to know Want the panel to open as you left it? Turn on “Keep last “Recent notes” state” in Settings > Home. The clock button is part of the keyboard toolbar.

Set a reminder on any note. Tapping the notification opens it. Open a note’s menu and tap “Remind me...”. Turn on “Date” and pick the day and time. Tap “Save”. Good to know Free plans can have 1 reminder at a time. More need a paid plan. See plans. If notifications are blocked, tap “Open Settings” and allow them. Want it to ring loudly? Try an alarm.

Make a note reminder ring even when Focus or silent mode is on.

For things you cannot afford to miss. Open a note’s menu and tap “Remind me...”. Turn on “Date” and pick the time. Turn on “Urgent” (“Alarm”). Tap “Save”. Good to know Alarms ring even when a Focus mode is on or the sound is off. If alarms are not allowed, tap “Open Settings” to enable them.

Be reminded about a note when you arrive at or leave a place.

Reminded about the groceries when you reach the shop, not before. Open a note’s menu and tap “Remind me...”. Turn on “Location” and tap “Add”. Search for a place or address. Choose “When I arrive” or “When I leave”. Pick a radius (100, 300, 500 or 1000 m) and tap “Set reminder”. Good to know Needs a paid plan. See plans. Not available on Mac.

Ask in plain words and get answers pulled from what you have written.

Instead of scrolling, ask. BrainDump reads your notes and answers. Go to your list of notes. Tap the BrainDump star button. Type your question. Tap “Send”. Try questions like “Summarize all my notes from April” “Make a list of ideas for project X” “What are the key points from yesterday’s meeting?” Good to know Each answer uses your AI allowance.

Create rewrites your notes into a new format: summary, meeting report, to-do list, tweet, email, blog post, presentation, report, questions or flashcards. From one note Press and hold the note. Tap “Create” and choose a type. The result is saved as a new note. From several notes Tap the BrainDump star button and choose “Create” at the top. Pick the type, then the notes. Tap “Create”, then copy the result or save it as a new note.

Font and size Open Settings > Editor. Tap “Font”: “Default”, “High focus”, “Dyslexia” or “Classic”. Drag the text size slider (10 to 30). Dark mode Open Settings > Appearance > “Theme” and choose “System”, “Light” or “Dark”.

Keep the tools you use most one tap away. In a note, tap the + button in the keyboard toolbar. Tap “Customize toolbar...”. Use the up and down arrows to move a tool between “Always visible tools” (up to 4) and “Additional tools”. Tap “Reset” to go back to the defaults. Good to know Tools: New note, Recent notes, Format, Freewriting, Background sounds and Ask. New note stays first. The Essential style hides “Customize toolbar...”. See Choose a style.

Add rain, forest or other ambient sounds to help you focus.

Ambient sound can help you settle in. Open a note and tap the + in the keyboard toolbar. Tap “Background sounds”. Pick a sound. Good to know Free: Rain, Forest and Fireplace. Paid: Cat’s purr, Café and Ocean. Turn on “Start sound on opening” in the player settings to play automatically.

Bring in notes from Evernote (.enex) or Apple Notes (Markdown) into a folder you choose.

Open Settings > “Import notes”. Choose the BrainDump folder for the imported notes. The next button stays off until you do. Tap “Choose file” and pick a .enex file, a .md file or a folder. Get the file first Evernote: select notes, then File > Export Notes… > Evernote ENEX Format (.enex). Tick “Include tags” to keep tags. Apple Notes: select notes, then File > Export as > Markdown. Other apps: look for an Export option and choose .enex or .md. Good to know Tags come across. Images do not.

Save a note as a file: text, HTML, RTF, a BrainDump file, Markdown or Word.

Open the note’s menu and tap “Export note”. Choose a format. Pick where to save the file. Free: “BrainDump document...”, “Plain text...”, “HTML...” and “RTF...”. Paid: “Markdown...” and “Word (.docx)...”. See plans. Good to know Export works on one note at a time. To keep everything, use Back up and restore.

Find your way around the sidebar, notes list and editor, and hide what you do not need.

On a bigger screen BrainDump shows several columns at once. What you see A narrow icon rail: “Write”, “Freewriting space”, “Background sounds”, your profile and Settings. The folders and tags sidebar, with “Recent notes” and “Pinned notes” at the top. The notes list. The editor. Make more room Tap the sidebar icon to hide the folders sidebar. Tap the arrows icon in the editor bar for “Full screen” (editor only). Tap it again to come back. On Mac, drag the thin lines between columns to resize them. BrainDump remembers the widths. How the iPad and Mac layout works

Settings opens in its own window, with a list of sections on the left. Click the gear at the bottom of the icon rail. Pick a section on the left. Sections Account, Home, Editor, Appearance, Merge Import notes, Backup, Notifications Community, Connect, Support, iCloud, Other apps Good to know Some sections only appear when they apply, for example Account and iCloud. Pop a note out into a small window that stays on top while you work in other apps.

Handy for keeping a list in view while you work elsewhere. Open the note. Click “Open in new window” in the editor bar, or in the note’s “Options” menu. Use “Size” in the window’s menu to make it Small, Medium, Large or Extra Large. Good to know The window stays on top by default. Turn it off with “Keep notes on top” (⌘K). In the window, ⌘N starts a new note and ⌘O opens the main app. The Essential style hides the “Open in new window” button. See Choose a style.

Write from any computer. Your notes stay in sync with the app. Go to app.getbraindump.com. Or open Settings in the app and tap “Use Brain Dump on the web”. Sign in with the email and password of your BrainDump account. What works Notes, Freewriting, folders, tags, search and Trash. Share links and export (Markdown, PDF, Word, RTF, HTML, text). Ask and Create, with a Focus plan. What does not Reminders, alarms, background sounds, importing notes, restoring backups, deleting your account and buying plans. Use the app for those.

Use BrainDump on the web

Send anyone a link to a note or folder. They can open and edit it with no account or app.

Anyone with the link can open and edit. Share it with people you trust. Sign in to your BrainDump account. Open the note’s (or folder’s) menu and tap “Share link...”. Tap “Make public”. Tap “Copy link” or “Share”. Turn it off Open “Share link...” again and tap “Disable sharing”. The old link stops working. Good to know Edits made through the link sync to all your devices. A folder link shares the notes directly inside it. Trashing a note or deleting a folder also ends its link.

Save every note, folder, tag and freewrite as one file from the web app.

In the web app, open Settings. Go to “Backup”. Click “Download backup”. Good to know The file is JSON, named like “BrainDump backup” plus the date. The app’s “Restore” expects a .bdbackup file, so treat this one as your personal copy. For a file the app can restore, see Back up and restore.

Back up your notes and sync them across iPhone, iPad, Mac and the web.

An account backs up your notes online and keeps every device in step. Without one, everything still works on your device. Tap the face icon, then “Settings”. On the account card, tap “Create account”. Enter your email and a password of at least 8 characters. Tap “Create account”. Your notes upload right after. Already have one? Tap “Log in”. Notes on this device are merged with your account, nothing is replaced. Good to know It syncs notes, folders, tags and Freewriting pages. Images are not synced. Free accounts sync up to 200 notes. Paid plans have no limit. Changes reach your other devices in seconds. See iCloud vs account.

Create a BrainDump account

What changes on a device when you sign in, and why you cannot go back to iCloud there.

Signing in replaces iCloud sync on that device. Your notes merge into your account. Nothing is deleted. Signing out later keeps your notes on the device but does not turn iCloud sync back on. Over 200 notes on a free plan? That device keeps using iCloud until you upgrade. Good to know Why an account? Faster sync, and your notes also reach the web app.

Save everything to one file, and bring it back any time. Restoring never deletes anything.

Make a backup Open Settings > “Import notes” > “Backup”. On Mac, open the Backup tab. Tap “Create backup” and save the .bdbackup file somewhere safe. Restore Open the same screen and tap “Choose backup file”. If some notes already exist, choose “Use the backup’s versions” or “Keep my versions”. Good to know Restoring only adds and updates. Notes not in the backup stay. BrainDump also keeps the last 3 daily copies on your device. Tap “Restore” next to one. Those copies never leave the device, so save a file too.

Get a reset link by email, or change your password from Settings.

Forgot it On the sign-in form, tap “Forgot password?”. Open the email and tap the link. Choose a new password (8 characters or more) and tap “Save”. Change it Signed in already? Open your account page and tap “Change password”. Good to know Link expired or opened on another device? Tap “Send a new link”.

Sign out and keep your notes on the device, or delete your online account.

Sign out Open your account page and tap “Sign out”. Your notes stay on this device. Sign in again any time to keep syncing. Delete your account Open your account page and find the “Danger zone”. Tap “Delete account”, then “Continue”. Confirm with “Delete account”. Good to know This cannot be undone. It deletes everything saved online. Notes on this device stay, but stop syncing. Your other devices are signed out. There is no delete option on the web.

Plans belong to your Apple ID, so a new device only needs a restore. Open the app and go to “Settings”. Tap “Unlock “Focus””. Scroll to the bottom and tap “Restore subscription”. Good to know Features not there yet? Close and reopen the app. Use the same Apple ID as the original purchase, with a stable connection. Renewed recently? Wait a few minutes and try again.

Check these in order when notes are missing on another device.

Your notes are safe on the device you wrote them on. Check these in order. Are you online? Offline changes sync when you are back. Signed in on every device? Notes sync through your account or iCloud, not both. Tap “Sync now” on your account card, or “Try again” if you see it. Free plan with 200 notes? Syncing stops at the limit. Empty Trash or see plans. Using iCloud? Check that your storage is not full.

My notes are not syncing

If your iCloud storage is full, BrainDump pauses sync. Your notes are safe.

Your iCloud storage is full, so BrainDump cannot sync to iCloud right now. Your notes are safe. They stay on this device, and sync resumes by itself once there is room. Open your device’s Settings and tap your name, then “iCloud”. Tap “Manage Account Storage” (or “Manage Storage”). Delete photos, videos, backups or files you no longer need, or upgrade your iCloud plan. Good to know Emptying “Recently Deleted” frees space at once. Sync usually resumes within a few minutes.

Why can’t my notes sync? iCloud is full

Fix wrong password, expired reset links and too many attempts.

“That email and password don’t match.” Check the email, or tap “Reset password”. See Reset your password. “There’s already an account with this email.” Switch to “Sign in” instead of creating one. Reset link expired. Tap “Send a new link” and use the newest email. “Too many attempts.” Wait a minute and try again. Good to know Passwords need 8 characters or more.

I can’t sign in

Allow BrainDump to paste from other apps so iOS stops asking.

iOS asks every time you paste from another app unless you allow it. Open your device’s Settings app. Tap “Apps” at the bottom of the list, then “BrainDump”. Tap “Paste from other apps”. Choose “Allow”.
